Rules
Players
Each team will consist of 4 rostered players.
Minimum of 3 players required to play.
Teams must field at least two women on the court at all times.
More players are allowed on a team roster and can sub in during play.
Substitutions
Players from other teams can substitute if rated at the same division or lower. For Example, if your team plays in the Upper Intermediate division you can have another player from Upper Intermediate, Lower Intermediate, or Recreational division.
For substitutions of players outside of our leagues, we ask for an honor system to keep play as fair as possible.
If any issues come up, reach out to our on-site staff. You can also use our Contact Us page or email us at info@milehighvolleyball.com.
Game
Games are played to 25 with a hard cap of 27.
Games are played to 21 with a hard cap of 23 (Spring and Fall).
Players are not required to rotate positions but must serve in a consistent order.
Server is not considered live, meaning the back row player cannot attack (spike).
Touching any part of the net is a net fault.
Serving
"Let" serves, where the ball makes contact with the net on serve, are legal.
Stepping on or over the line prior to making contact with the ball is a foot fault and loss of point.
Catching or dropping a tossed ball will result in a side-out.
You may not prevent the opposing team, through screening, from seeing the server or the path of the ball. At an opponent's request, a player must provide a clear line of sight for the receiving team.
You may not block or attack a serve.
Setting
Sets are called at the level of the Division
For Advanced, sets must leave the setter's hands cleanly without multiple contacts on the ball.
For Upper Intermediate, sets must leave the setter’s hands relatively cleanly, but slight rotation/double contact is acceptable, nothing egregious.
For Lower Intermediate, sets do not have to be clean, but any egregious rotation or doubles should be called.
For Recreational, there are no specific rules for hand setting, play safe and smart.
A setter may set the ball over the net (forward or backward), provided his/her shoulders are perpendicular to the path of the ball and leaves the hands clean. Side or directional sets are not permitted over the net.
Ball Handling
A player may open hand set a hard driven attack in their attempt to return that attack. A double hit on that return is acceptable.
When receiving a serve, a player may not open hand the serve.
The first contact on the ball may be double hit and still counted as a single contact provided that the double contact is made in one attempt to play the ball. For example, digging a ball with the forearms that then bounces off their face as part of the same single motion is allowed.
The ball may be played with any part of the body.
A block touch is not considered one of the three contacts allowed per team.
You may not lift the ball, which includes palming or throwing the ball on a hit. This rule also applies to receiving hard driven attacks.
When contacting the ball with one hand, the ball must be cleanly hit with
The palm of the hand, such a roll shots
Locked fingers or knuckles
Closed fist
Back of the hand
Redirection of, or tipping, the ball is not allowed.
You may not "roof" the ball by blocking a setter in the motion of setting the ball on their side of the net. A blocker may extend his/her hands over the net when
The ball is the plane and is an attack by the opponent or a setter dump (hit crossing over the net).
